Mexico removes the 10% duty on qualifying car assembly inputs
Mexico’s 13 October decree temporarily exempts tariff item 9803.00.01 from import duty, previously 10%. It starts on 14 October 2026 for five years. The benefit covers qualifying automotive assembly parts and components, not every imported car part.
What changed
Eligibility is limited to terminal automotive manufacturers with customs authorization for fiscal-deposit assembly and vehicle manufacturing, subject to Economy Ministry guidelines. SKD/CKD projects are part of the stated rationale, but a project label alone does not establish eligibility.
Match the tariff item and authorization before changing the import-duty line of a cost estimate.
Three checks for import teams
- Confirm the goods fit 9803.00.01 and the authorized assembly operation.
- Check the importer’s fiscal-deposit authorization and applicable Economy Ministry guidelines.
- Use the 14 October start and five-year term when reconciling eligible entry costs.
