U.S. delays postal formal-entry deadline to 20 January 2027
CBP moved the postal formal-entry compliance date from 22 October 2026 to 20 January 2027. The extension covers mail subject to partner agency requirements, Chapter 98/99 duties, or specified Chapter 98 and free-trade-agreement duty-free claims.
What changed
The extension gives importers, brokers and postal logistics providers more time to prepare data and systems for 19 CFR 145.12(a)(2)(v)–(vi). The existing informal mail process remains available during the delay.
Eligible shipments can instead use the voluntary Entry Type 13 test, which began on 22 September 2026; the suspension of duty-free de minimis treatment remains in place.
Three checks for import teams
- Move the affected postal compliance plan to 20 January 2027 and identify the PGA, Chapter 98/99 or FTA condition for each shipment.
- Confirm with the filer whether the current informal process, formal entry or the eligible Type 13 test will be used.
- Keep collecting tariff, origin, value and agency data during the extension; confirm duties and requirements with the broker.
